Violet Nelson, 88, of Caspian, died Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2011, at her home after a battle with cancer.

She was born March 10, 1923, in Berkshire Location, the daughter of the late Joseph and Rose (Folino) Fittante. She attended the Stambaugh Schools. She grew up in Berkshire Location until 1940, when her parents built a new home in Caspian at 536 First St. She worked for Harry Plous as a salesperson in the Chicago Store in the furniture department.

On Feb. 18, 1947, she married Arthur H. Nelson at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Caspian. Her husband established Nelson Floor Covering in Caspian and she served as secretary and sales representative for the business. They owned and operated the business for 37 years, and in the later years of the business, the couple wintered in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where he also installed carpeting and tile floors for another carpet shop. They retired in 1987, and Arthur passed away on Jan. 21, 1998.

Violet was a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Caspian. She enjoyed cooking and baking Italian food and playing cards.

She is survived by her sister, Mary (Leo) Pisoni of Victorian Heights; brother, Tony (Patricia) Fittante of Escanaba; nieces, nephews, and cousins; and special friend, Stanley Brzoznowski.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Camille Perlongo, and a brother, Louis Fittante.

Visitation will be held on Friday from 12 noon to 1:45 p.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home.

Funeral service will be held on Friday at 2 p.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home with Rev. Gregory Veneklase to officiate.

Interment will be held in the Stambaugh Cemetery in Iron River.
