Rosemary was born April 18, 1923, in Marquette to Joseph and Edna (Bjork) Leonard. She graduated from Bishop Baraga High School in 1944, earned her B.S. in Business Education from Northern Michigan College in 1944, and earned her M.A. (1957) and Ph.D. in Education (1968) from the University of Michigan.
A veteran, she served as a lieutenant junior grade in the U.S. Navy Reserve, and was stationed at Cambridge, MA and the Navy Radio School in Monterey, CA. While stationed at Monterey, Rosemary met Dr. Eugene Cummins and they were married in 1946. They moved to Hollis, OK, where she was widowed in 1948.
Rosemary and her infant daughter returned to Marquette where she worked at Northern as a bookkeeper-manager of the business office from 1949 to 1953. She left there to teach at Escanaba High School in the Business Education Department from 1953-57, returning to teach in Northern's School of Business in 1957. Moving downstate, she taught at Eastern Michigan University from 1967-76, then returned to NMU where she taught until her retirement in 1985.
Rosemary married Duane DeLoach in May 1966. They lived in Blissfield, MI where Duane was the editor and publisher of the Blissfield Advance. In 1976, Duane retired and they moved to Marquette.
Rosemary was active in numerous organizations, both professional and community. She was a former member of St. Louis the King Catholic Church and a current member of St. Michael Catholic Church.
Rosemary is survived by three sons, Vincent (Martha) DeLoach of Memphis, TN, Joseph DeLoach of Traverse City, MI, and Beau (Ellen) DeLoach of Ann Arbor, MI; daughters, Jean McLean of Marquette and Judy (Thomas) Peele of Allegan, MI; a brother, John Joseph (Anne) Leonard of Tucson, AZ; 12 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren; daughters-in-law, Lu DeLoach of Ann Arbor, MI and Char DeLoach of Farmington; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Guy Eugene Cummins in 1948 and Duane DeLoach in 1988; sons, William and Thomas DeLoach; a daughter, Margaret DeLoach; and sister, Ann.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 25, 2011, from 3 to 6 p.m. in the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home. A parish prayer service will be held at 5:30 p.m. followed by a recital of the rosary. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, October 26, 2011 at 11 a.m. in St. Michael Catholic Church with Rev. Larry Van Damme officiating. Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Mary Grove Retreat Center in Garden, Michigan or the Bay Cliff Health Camp.
