Leroy "Mike" Quilliam

Leroy "Mike" Quilliam, 90, of Iron Mountain, died Thursday, June 30, 2011, at his home.

He was born on Sept. 20, 1920, in Marquette, the son of the late Wilfred and Mary (Malloy) Quilliam.

Mike graduated from Bishop Baraga High School and from Northern State Teachers College, both in Marquette. He was a commercial/business teacher for the L'Anse, Bergland, and Vulcan School Districts. He also worked as an accountant at Fleury's before starting his own accounting firm, Quilliam Accounting. Mike eventually sold his accounting firm and was employed at Anderson Tackman & Company until he retired at the age of 75.

Mike was a member of Pine Grove Country Club and enjoyed golfing. He golfed as often as he could, walking and pulling his own cart, even at the age of 89!

Mike had a strong faith and was a member of St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church, where he was a lector. He was a member and past president of the Holy Name Society, the St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic School Board, and the Iron Mountain-Kingsford Rotary Club.

Mike enjoyed fishing, hunting and his daily walks. He had a passion for reading and enjoyed books on the Civil War. He was very proud of his Irish Heritage and made trips to Beaver Island and Ireland to trace his family's roots.

Mike married Dorothy Beaudry on Aug. 5, 1943, in Marquette at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. They moved to Iron Mountain from Marquette in 1950. Dorothy preceded him in death on April 30, 2002.

Leroy is survived by six children, Michael (Elizabeth) Quilliam of East Lansing, Mich., Patricia (James) Covitz of Iron Mountain, Carol (Michael) Birkett of Durham, NC, Kaye (Ralph) Scrivo of Fraser, Mich., David (Cathy) Quilliam of Lake City, Mich., and Diane (Craig) Swanson of Kenosha, Wis.; a foster sister, Clara Malvasio of Marquette, a special sister-in-law, Gerry Kukuk and her daughter, Julie Tass, 16 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Clyde Quilliam; three sisters, Jeanne Jaakola, Dorothy Vasseau, and Betty Barry; his foster parents, Elizabeth and Jake Coppens; and his foster brother, Brud Coppens.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Dickinson County Cancer Unit, 1401 S. Carpenter Ave. Kingsford, MI 49801, or the charity of the donor's choice.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Funeral services will be at 12 noon at the church. Father Daniel Zaloga will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial.

Burial will be in Cemetery Park.
