Harry Frederick "Fred" Loehde, Jr., age 84, of 3152 Lakeshore Boulevard, Marquette, entered eternal life Saturday afternoon, September 10, 2011, at his home, in the loving and comforting care of his family and Lake Superior Hospice.

Fred was born October 18, 1926, in Owen, Wisconsin, a son of Harry and Lillian (Menhennet) Loehde, and came to Marquette as an infant where he was raised by his mother and stepfather, Bob Schwenke.

He attended Graveraet High School and, before graduation, was drafted into the US Navy. He proudly served his country from 1944 until the end of World War II in 1946. On October 17, 1959, Fred married the former Vivian Bertha Johnson and together the couple made a home and raised their daughter in Marquette. Fred was employed as a sales manager with the Spear and Sons Lumber Company for over 42 years, retiring in 1989. Fred loved working with wood and could usually be found whittling, building models, or being involved in some building project. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and swimming.

Fred and Bertha enjoyed traveling all over the country to visit their daughter at the various places she resided and even made two enjoyable trips to Hawaii. He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church and the Richard Jopling Post 44 of the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, V. Bertha Loehde; his daughter, Julie (David) Thomson of Johnsburg, IL; grandchildren, Tavis, Kirsten, and Shae Thomson; and brothers, Robert (Mary) Schwenke of Negaunee and Richard (Paula) Schwenke of Marquette; several nieces and nephews. Fred was preceded in death by his father, Harry Loehde; mother and stepfather, Lillian and Bob Schwenke; and his sister, Joan Walin.

The family will receive relatives and friends at St. Paul's Episcopal Church on Thursday, September 15, from 3:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. A memorial service will begin at 4:00 p.m. Thursday with Rev. Kevin Thew Forrester, pastor, officiating. Inurnment will be made in the church columbarium. A reception will be held in the church fellowship hall.
