MARQUETTE - Donald George Britton, Sr. of 1617 Gray Street, Marquette, passed away on May 31, 2011, at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility in Ishpeming.

He was born on December 7, 1916, in Big Rapids, Michigan, the son of John Q. and Ethel (Steadman) Britton. Don moved to Marquette with his family in 1918 and was a lifelong resident. His working career began at an early age, and at 14 he got his start in the logging industry, a span which lasted 20 years. During World War II, Don worked in Civil Service, building airstrips in Greenland. In 1950, he became self-employed in the construction industry, retiring in 1973. Don loved the outdoors and all that nature had to offer, especially going to camp on Dodge City Road up off the Triple A. He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, an active member of the Noon Kiwanis, and a member of the Hiawathaland Snowmobile Club. He also donated land to Habitat for Humanity.

Don is survived by his sons, Donald G. (Jackie) Britton, Jr., of Harvey and Larry E. Britton of Colorado Springs, CO, his daughters, Donna M. (Ron) Warner of Colorado Springs, CO, and Jean M. (Jim) Anderson of Kincheloe; his special companion Loreen Eliassen of Marquette, a brother, Rev. Everett (Joyce) Britton of Delaware; two sisters-in-law Margaret Britton and Mary Lou Britton; and 20 grandchildren, many great grandchildren, several great-great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his second wife, Agnes (Miller) Smith Britton; a step-son, Albin Smith and wife Baraba; a sister, Diana Piche; and brothers, John, Clyde, Lloyd, Ronald, and Clifford "Stanley" Britton. Grandchildren will be Pallbearers. The family will receive relatives and friends at the Redeemer Lutheran Church on Monday, June 6, beginning at 10:00 am. Funeral services will follow at 11:00am with Rev. Steve Hulke, pastor, officiating. A reception will be held in the church fellowship hall immediately following the service. Entombment will be made at the Northland Chapel Gardens Mausoleum. The Fassbender Funeral Home is serving the family, where condolences may be expressed online at www.fassbenderfuneralhome.com.
