Dennis M. Moore, a longtime resident of Lake Leelanau, passed away Saturday, July 23, 2011. Dennis, 77, was the beloved husband to Gerd for 54 years; cherished father of Brian (Laura), Glenn (Lisa), and Cyndi (Stephen); grandfather to Jessica, Alex, Brett, Brad, Stephanie, Natalie, Jordyn and Brandon. He's the brother of Brian and was preceded in death by his mother, Ruth; father, Joseph; brother, Joe; and infant granddaughter, Amy.

Dennis was born April 19, 1934, in Evansville, Ind., and spent most of his youth and early adulthood in Evanston, Ill. He married his college sweetheart, Gerd, in 1957, and after serving his country in the U.S. Army, Dennis graduated from the University of Illinois with a BA in Psychology and started his family.

Dennis had a lifelong passion to help children. He touched the lives of hundreds of kids through his years as a Little League baseball coach in Evanston. Dennis further acted upon his passion to help children by becoming a special needs teaching consultant, earning his master's degree in Learning Disabilities from Northeastern Illinois.

Dennis moved to Lake Leelanau in 1976, where he continued his career at Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District. Dennis remained active in youth athletics by coaching girls' basketball. He was the JV and assistant varsity girls' basketball coach at Leland High School.

Dennis had many interests and a lifelong desire to continue learning. Some of his favorite interests were politics, Chicago White Sox baseball, Big Ten basketball, jazz music, golf, computers, and website development.

A celebration of life gathering will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, at the Leland Lodge. You can also share your thoughts and memories of Dennis at www.RememberingDennisMoore.com
