Vernon Francis Crawford, age 86, of Marquette, entered eternal life Sunday morning, April 30, 2017, at his home, in the loving, comforting care of his family.

Born July 25, 1930, in Pickford, a son of Frank and Mary (Kennedy) Crawford, Vern was raised in Pickford, graduating from Pickford High School, Class of 1948. Following graduation, Vern spent a summer driving carriages on Mackinac Island before moving to Detroit where he was employed with Chrysler for a year. When Chrysler went on strike, he returned to Pickford where he met and later married Phyllis Catherine Winslow on May 12, 1951. The couple relocated to Marquette where they owned and operated Crawford’s Service Station on Washington Street for 10 years. Vern later began employment with the Marquette Branch Prison, retiring in 1991 as mail supervisor, following 29 years of service. For the last 25 years, Vern and Phyllis spent their winters in Arizona. Vern was a member of the Negaunee Rod and Gun Club and the National Rifle Association. While employed at the prison, he was a member of the Marquette Branch Prison All Weapons Team, winning several statewide competitions. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, loved camping, square dancing, playing cribbage, avid Lions and Tigers fan, and was a member of the POPS Club.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Phyllis; his four daughters, Linda (Don) McFarland of Louisville, KY, Nancy Ann Crawford of Marquette, Pattie (Robert) Mercure of Marquette, and Kathleen Keller of Marquette; eight granddaughters, Jessica (Bryan) Sandstrom, Emily (Michael) Linn, Amanda (James) Smith, Amy Mercure, Kim (Chris) Baker, Bethany (Eric) Dick, Allison (Matthew) Byce, Danielle (Nick) Slattery; 13 great-grandchildren and one due in September; his brother, Lyle Crawford of South Carolina; his sister, Edith (Jimmy) Dilday of Tennessee; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins; and a special friend, Cathy (Karl) Vroman.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters.

The family will receive relatives and friends at the Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home on Saturday, May 6th, beginning at 10:00 am until the time of service at noon. Rev. Leon Jarvis will preside. A reception will follow in the reception room located at the funeral home.

Interment will be made in Northland Chapel Gardens on Monday, May 8th at 10:00 am.
