On January 28, 2017, after a short illness, Sharon Gay Laurich, passed peacefully from this life with her loving family by her side.
As a young girl, Sharon spent many hours helping her dad at Doc’s Corner. It was while working at Doc’s that she first met Louie, her future husband and partner for life. They married in 1953, making their home in Trowbridge Park where they started their family. In 1968, after their ninth child was born, Louie and Sharon decided they needed a house with more than one bathroom. They built another home in Harvey and moved there in 1971, where Sharon spent the next couple decades raising their family. Wife, Mother, Grandmother (Granny) and Great-Grandmother were the most important roles in her life. Once the children were in high school and beyond, Sharon worked outside the home as a housekeeper at the Edgewater Motel and later the Huron Mountain Club, where she enjoyed the solitude and beauty of the woods. Though her family kept her busy, she had other interests. She loved gardening, especially her flower gardens. She also had a life-long passion for horses and always had one or more horses throughout most of her life. Bird watching was another interest, and she could name most every bird by sight. As Sharon’s children began families of their own, she loved spending time with her grandchildren, especially since when they got too rambunctious, she could send them home. In her later years, she enjoyed being spontaneous and just taking off for an adventure or even a simple car ride around the Island and a stop at Frosty Treats. Yes, she did have quite the sweet tooth and loved her desserts and, occasionally a wine cooler in the evening with Louie.
Sharon was preceded in death by her father and mother, H.G. “Doc” Johnston and Beda Marie (Hultgren) Johnston; daughter, Laurel Wallace; brother, John Johnston; and sister, Christine Johnston.
Surviving Sharon is her devoted husband of 64 years, Louis; sons, David (Gina) Laurich and Paul (Kelly) Laurich; daughters, Debbie Laurich, Pam Laurich (the late Paul) Polione, Susan (Alton) Henderson, Carol (Dale) Pelkola, Barbara Laurich, & Diane (Dave) Ziegner; and 16 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren or more, depending on who is counting. Sharon is also survived by her sister-in-law, Bonnie (John) Johnston. She will be dearly missed by all of us.
Our family would like to extend our gratitude for the exceptional compassion and care given to Sharon during her short stay at Norlite.
In lieu of flowers, if desired, donations to UPAWS or your favorite charity will be gratefully appreciated.
