Pearl Turenne, age 94, of Marquette, entered eternal life on Saturday, September 2, 2017 at the Eastwood Nursing Center in the loving care of her family.
Born April 29, 1923 in Marquette, a daughter of William Henry and Sarah Jane (Harris) Jacobs, Pearl was raised in Marquette and was a 1940 graduate of Graveraet High School. Following graduation, she was employed for a time at Doc’s Delicatessen and then with College Laundry in bookkeeping. In 1943, she joined the ranks of those employed with Michigan Bell Telephone. For over 36 years, Pearl was employed as a telephone operator with Michigan Bell, and then with AT & T, two years of which were served in Escanaba. She retired in 1979. On September 21, 1945, Pearl married William Fleury and together the couple established their home and raised their children in Marquette. Bill preceded Pearl in death in 1981. On August 24, 1985, Pearl married Joseph Turenne, a longtime friend who had been widowed in 1982. Joe not only welcomed Pearl as his new bride, but she already had a family of five children which provided Joe and Pearl with the delight of their lives grandchildren! Both relished being grandparents and the joining of the two families, perfect. In retirement, Pearl and Joe traveled some, he golfed a little and puttered around the yard, and Pearl enjoyed her craftwork, especially knitting, crocheting, and working with plastic canvas. The couple kept a beautiful home, known for its beautiful flower beds in summer and top notch Christmas displays. Pearl was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and an active member of Lady Elks. Her and her husband Joe were active supporters and volunteers at Bay Cliff Health.
Survivors include her children, Julie Fleury of Marquette, Barbara (Dale) Ollila of Harvey, Robert (Jill) Fleury of Marquette, Mark Fleury of St. Petersburg, FL, and Michelle (Joseph) Ries of Fond du Lac, WI; those wonderful grandchildren, Scott (Hannah) Glass, Jill (Dan) Dulany , Chad (Sarah Steen) Beauchamp, Ryan, Holly, Jordan, and Elizabeth Pearl Fleury, Evan, Hunter and Grant Ries; her great-grandson, Hunter William Beauchamp; her cousins, John “Jack” and Ron Bullock; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jack (Sally) Fleury.
In addition to her parents and first husband, Bill Fleury; Pearl was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Louise Marie Fleury; her second husband, Joseph Turenne in 2010; a son, David Turenne in 2000; and by sisters, Ruth Jacobs, Olive Jane and husband, Gerald Cain, Elaine and husband, Milton Ericson.
Friends may call at the Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home on Friday, September 8, 2017 from 11:00 am until the time of service at 1:00 pm. Rev. Leon Jarvis will preside. Interment will be made in the Holy Cross Cemetery.
The family wishes to express their appreciation to Dr. Thomas Huffman, Marcey, Cassie, and Katy, the staff of Upper Peninsula Home Health and Hospice, and the staff of Eastwood Nursing Center for the compassionate, professional, and loving care given to Pearl, and the many kindnesses extended to her family.
