Paul R. Hytinen, 72, of Marquette, died peacefully Wednesday morning, August 29, 2018 at his home, surrounded by his wife and children and under the care of Lake Superior Life Care & Hospice.
He was born September 30, 1945 in Marquette, a son of the late S. Victor and Signe (Karhi) Hytinen. He was a 1963 graduate of Graveraet High School.
Paul joined the US Navy and proudly served in the submarine service for 8 years. During that time, he served on the USS Thomas Jefferson SSBN618 and was a Vietnam veteran.
He worked as a Trooper with the Michigan State Police for 23 years at the Iron River and Detroit posts. The last 6 years of his service he instructed the DARE program out of the Iron River post. Paul retired in 1995.
After retiring from the Michigan State Police, Paul worked at The Bike Shop in Stambaugh, MI where he enjoyed fixing bikes and talking peoples ears off.
He was an active member of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Iron River as an altar server and a catechism teacher. He was also a member of St. Michael Catholic Church and was involved as an altar server and RCIA.
His interests included hockey, baseball, motorcycle racing, touring motorcycles, coaching baseball & hockey, hiking, camping and the outdoors.
Paul will be remembered as a man of service to his country, community and his faith.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Paulette (Phillips) Hytinen of Marquette; children, Eric (Annie) Hytinen of Zuni, VA, Sherri (Scott) Tarsi of Iron River, MI, Kerri (Scott) Fenley of Marquette and David Hytinen of Durango, CO; grandchildren, Wesley Fenley, Madison Hytinen, Ryan Fenley, Anthony Tarsi and Tyler Hytinen; and nieces, nephews & cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Herbert & Richard Hytinen and Patricia Ryan.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 1, 2018 from 9 am to 11 am at St. Michael Catholic Church. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 am in the church with Rev. Gregory Heikkala officiating and Rev. Larry VanDamme concelebrating. Following the Mass, interment will take place in Park Cemetery. Military Honors will be provided by the Vietnam Veterans of America Negaunee Chapter.
