Helen Marie Bowers, age 88, of Marquette, entered eternal life Monday, April 3, 2017, at Mill Creek Assisted Living, surrounded in the loving, comforting care of her family.
Helen was born January 17, 1929, in Sault Ste Marie, Canada, a daughter of Norwegian immigrants Alex and Esther (Christenson) Stenbol, and was raised in Sault Ste Marie, Canada. Helen met the love of her life, Donald A. Bowers, and the couple was married on August 23, 1953, in Sault Ste Marie. Together, they established a home and raised their family in Marquette.
For more than 20 years, Helen was employed in the business offices of Marquette General Hospital, retiring in 1988. She enjoyed 29 years of retirement, during which time she volunteered at
the hospital, was an active member of Messiah Lutheran Church and its quilting group, and belonged to the Knotty Knitters group. She was known for being generous with her time and talent, both during her working years and in “retirement”. An accomplished knitter, she shared many handcrafted items with family and friends, while also winning awards for her knitting talents. In retirement, both she and Don enjoyed walking and spending winters in Mississippi, Arizona, and Florida. Very social, the couple were members of several bridge clubs throughout the years and made friends wherever they traveled. Helen was a great cook and baker and a wonderful host to whomever was visiting. You were always greeted by her warm smile.
Helen is survived by her daughter, Nancy (Bob) Gabres of Duluth, MN; son, Chris (Joanie) Bowers of St. Louis, MO; and her dear grandchildren, Lexy Bowers and Adriana Gabres. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Don; and a brother, Bill Stenbol.
Friends may call at the Messiah Lutheran Church on Friday, April 7, beginning at 11:00 am until the time of service at 12:00 noon. Rev. David Van Kley and Rev. Amanda Kossow, pastors, will officiate. A reception will follow in Magnuson Hall. Interment will be made at Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Messiah Lutheran Quilters, 305 W. Magnetic Street, Marquette, MI 49855 or Bay Cliff Health Camp, P.O. Box 310, Big Bay, MI 49808.
