Franklin M. (Mike) Smith, 65 of Marquette, passed away in the presence of his family early Tuesday morning, August 8, 2017, at the Mayo Clinic Methodist Hospital in Rochester, MN.
Mike was born December 6, 1951, in Marquette, to Franklin G. and Mary (Walin) Smith. Mike was a 1970 graduate of Marquette Senior High School. He graduated from Michigan Technological University with a B.S. in Engineering in 1977. Mike married Allison (Alli) Myshrall, May 24, 1978. They moved to Seattle, WA, and worked as Boeing engineers.
Mike purchased Superior Electric from his father in 1982, and the couple returned to Marquette. He grew the company from solely an electric motor sales and service business to include off-grid power systems. He continued to own and operate the business until his passing. His son, Peter, has been working by his side, and together with valuable employees, will continue his work.
Mike and Alli began their family in 1983, raising four children. The family enjoyed spending summers at Middle Island Point. Mike was adamant about spending time with family and friends at camp. When not at Superior Electric, this project oriented man was working at camp at MIP, on his boat (the Oluf Mechalson), in his garage on cars and motorcycles, and more recently at the homes of his children. He was passionate about maintaining and interacting with residents of the house purchased for his son, Trevor. This house is home to five young men with disabilities. This home was developed using LARC (Living As A Real Community) concepts. LARC is a non-profit that currently raises funds to provide vehicles (handicapped accessible) to residents of the Trevor Smith Home and an apartment, housing two women, also with disabilities.
The highlight of his summers were his annual excursions on the Oluf Mechalson, creating the Great Oluf Adventures, while circumnavigating the Big Lake. In the early years, he traveled with his sons, but for the past eleven with his brother in-law, Ron and close friend, Bob McArthur (Renton, WA). They ventured to the Keweenaw, Isle Royal, the Apostle Islands, and explored the rugged North Shore. They crossed through the center of the Big Lake twice, both North and South and flew kites under the Big Mac.
Mike was an avid bird hunter and loved to hunt ruffed grouse and woodcock locally, with his German Shorthair Pointers, who are as much a part of the family as his children. In the fall, he headed to Montana with sons, friends and dogs – hunting pheasant, Hungarian partridge and sharp tailed grouse.
Mike is survived by his wife Allison; sons Trevor of Marquette, Tristan (Kalei) of Seattle, WA, and Peter (Kammie) of Marquette; daughter Natalie of Marquette; brothers Dan and Warren Smith; sister Rebecca (Vern) Barber; sister-in-law’s, Sue Yarusso (Ray Hite), Jodi (Ron) Ryoti, and Miki O’Donovan, and his mother-in-law, Fritz Myshrall; several nieces and nephews and his beloved German Shorthairs, Audi and Bode.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Mary and father-in-law Jack Myshrall.
Honoring Mike’s wishes, there will be private services.
In his memory, donations may be made to LARC Marquette, P.O. Box 487, Marquette, MI 49855, or to Bay Cliff Health Camp, P.O. Box 310, Big Bay, MI 49808.
