ISHPEMING, MI. – David E. Marietti, age 61, of 508 E. North St. Ishpeming passed away peacefully on Wednesday December 10, 2014 at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility where he has been a resident since March 2014.
David was born January 21, 1953 in Ishpeming to John J. & Ruth E. (Dompierre) Marietti. He was born with Down Syndrome but lived a full life with numerous accomplishments. He was a blessing to his family the way he showed compassion to others.
David was a participant in various Special Olympic sports for many years. Though he competed in many sports, he excelled as a free style swimmer. He also logged thousands of miles on his tandem bike. In 1993 David rode from Sacramento, CA to Atlanta, GA., a ride covering over 3,000 miles. He had several major trips including rides to Detroit, Dubuque, Iowa and New Jersey via Ontario, Canada. He also cycled the North Island of New Zealand. David was an 18 year member of the Pioneer Kiwanis Club and lifelong member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
David is survived by 7 sisters: Marie (Ensio) Ostola of Ishpeming, Ruth Jean (Norman) Holmes of Ishpeming, Alice Dellangelo of Ishpeming, Dorothy (David) Myers of Benson, AZ, Edith Epper of Mesa, AZ, Margaret (Joseph) DiStefano of Broomall, PA, & Florence (Daniel) Cain of Dallas, GA, 6 brothers: Gerald (Sally) Marietti of Ogden, UT, Bob (Cheryl) Marietti of Ishpeming, Paul Marietti of Ishpeming, Raymond Marietti of Ishpeming, Richard (Mary Lou) Marietti of Marquette and William (Jan) Marietti of Hendersonville, NC, sister-in-law and for 22 years the foster parent of David, Karen Marietti of Ishpeming, along with numerous nieces & nephews and great nieces and great nephews.
The family would like to thank Dr. Michael Prevost for his wise medical counsel and the staff at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility for their kind care, compassion and interplay with David during his eight months at the Facility.
David was preceded in death by a sister Judith Epper, 2 brothers: Greg & John Marietti, sisters-in-law Florence Marietti, Dorothy Marietti and Ruth Marietti and brother-in-law Eugene Dellangelo.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 5:00 pm on Tuesday, December 16, 2014 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ishpeming with Fr. Dan Moll officiating. David’s family will greet relatives and friends at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Tuesday from 3:00 pm until the time of service at 5:00 p.m.
