Aili Crowley

Date of Birth: November 18, 1918
Date of Death: April 26, 2012

Aili Helen (Savolainen) Crowley, age 93, of 436 W. Hewitt Avenue, Marquette, entered eternal life Thursday afternoon, April 26, 2012, at Marquette General Hospital in the loving, comforting care of her family.

Born in Negaunee on November 18, 1918, a daughter of Tobias and Hilda (Albrecht) Savolainen, Aili was raised in Negaunee, and was a 1936 graduate of the Negaunee High School. Following graduation, she enrolled in St. Luke’s School of Nursing, receiving her certification as a registered nurse in 1940. Aili met her husband, Bernard (Pete) Crowley at a dance in the old Palestra in Marquette.

Aili and Pete were married in 1942 in Petoskey, Michigan where Aili was working as a nurse. Pete was in the service at the time, having enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps at the start of World War II. Aili’s nursing career spanned many years. She was employed at the polio clinic located at the Bay Cliff Health Camp in Big Bay. She then left nursing to raise her family, which eventually grew to include eight children. After raising her children, Aili returned to her nursing career, serving in the OB Ward at the former St. Mary’s Hospital and later at Marquette General Hospital. A lover of exercise and the outdoors, Aili enjoyed ice skating, bicycling, walking, swimming, and working in her flower gardens. She loved to read and always kept up on current events. After Aili and Pete retired, they were able to enter into a new enjoyable phase in their lives. Many of their winters were happily spent in Phoenix, Arizona. They traveled frequently, including two trips to Hawaii. Aili also had the opportunity to visit her parents’ hometown in Finland with her daughter, Carolyn.

Aili was a member of St. Peter Cathedral, the cathedral altar society, and the school Parent Teacher Association (PTA).

Survivors include her children, Mary Beth Crowley of LaCrosse, WI, Katherine Jean Crowley and Carolyn Ann (Les Connon) Crowley both of Marquette; Michael (Suzanne) Crowley, Richard Crowley and Patrick Crowley, all of Marquette, and Mark (Carmen) Crowley of Detroit; seven grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and two step-great grandchildren; a sister, Elizabeth Kevern of Marquette; and brothers, William T. Savolainen of Lansing and Tarmo Savolainen of Negaunee. Aili also leaves numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, in the United States and in Finland. In addition to her parents, Aili was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard, in 1993; a son, Daniel Crowley in 1979; infant sister, Anna Savolainen; and a brother, Toivo Savolainen.

The family will receive relatives and friends at the Fassbender Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 2, from 4:00 pm until the time of service at 6:00 pm. Rev. Ryan Ford will officiate. Interment will be made in the Holy Cross Cemetery.
